A vital free service to foreign residents since 1985 – find out more!

Mijas is a municipality in Malaga province in Andalucia, lying between Fuengirola and Marbella.

Mijas now has nearly 90,000 registered residents, more than 35% of whom are non-Spanish. The vast majority are British, Scandinavian and German, but in total there are no less than 125 different nationalities represented. Mijas is truly an international town which spreads from the sea to the mountains!

Founded in 1985, the Mijas Foreigner’s Department was the first of its kind in Spain, and was set up to address the needs of foreign residents and tourists, providing a central point of contact for information and support in multiple languages – and for free!

Based in the Town Hall office in La Cala de Mijas, the Foreigner’s Department provides information and direct assistance with a multitude of municipal and public services, as well as promoting integration and a better cultural understanding, as they help foreign residents “navigate the system” in their new home.

So, how exactly can Mijas Foreigner’s Department help?

  • Provide general information about living in Mijas either in person, over the phone or by email
  • Guidance and advice about the various Municipal Departments – licensing, housing and vehicle taxes, permissions for works and development
  • Padron registration, digital certificates, changing address on documents (including for vehicles)
  • Translation services at Town Hall and Social Services
  • Advice about accessing health care, charitable organisations in the area and domestic violence
  • Work closely with the various Consulates throughout Malaga to share information.

The Foreigner’s Department also arranges regular events throughout the year, including presentations to share information on new laws, processes etc, seminars, activities with Spanish and foreign clubs and associations, language exchange workshops and holiday events.
