Planning a weekend away, arranging an appointment or wondering why everything is suddenly closed? There’s a good chance it’s a festivo. Here’s our guide to Spain’s public holidays in 2026, including the dates that apply across the country and the local holidays here in Alhaurín de la Torre.
So, what is a festivo?
In Spain, a festivo is a public holiday. Some mark religious celebrations, such as Christmas and Good Friday, while others mark national or regional occasions, such as Spain’s National Day or Día de Andalucía.
You’ll soon get to know Semana Santa (Holy Week), Navidad (Christmas) and your town’s own celebrations. Many towns honour a patron saint and hold an annual feria, with live music, fairground rides, food, dancing and plenty of late nights. A feria can run for several days, so check the municipal calendar to see which day is an official public holiday.
The usual annual calendar includes 12 public holidays set through the national and regional calendars, plus up to two local holidays chosen by each municipality. That’s why the dates can differ even between neighbouring towns.
Spain’s nationwide public holidays in 2026
These eight dates appear in every regional calendar in the official 2026 list.
- Thursday 1 January – New Year’s Day
- Tuesday 6 January – Epiphany, known as Three Kings’ Day or Día de Reyes
- Friday 3 April – Good Friday
- Friday 1 May – Labour Day
- Saturday 15 August – Assumption of the Virgin
- Monday 12 October – Spain’s National Day
- Tuesday 8 December – Immaculate Conception
- Friday 25 December – Christmas Day
All Saints’ Day (1 November) and Constitution Day (6 December) both fall on Sundays in 2026. Some regions, including Andalucía, observe them on Monday 2 November and Monday 7 December respectively. You can check which dates apply where you live in the official 2026 public holiday calendar published in the BOE.
Bridging the gap with a puente
A puente literally means a bridge. When a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, people often take the Monday or Friday off to turn it into a four-day weekend. Some schools also schedule a day off, so check the school calendar if you’re making family plans.
In January, Friday 2 January and Monday 5 January were natural days to take off around New Year and Three Kings. Good Friday on 3 April, Labour Day on 1 May, Spain’s National Day on Monday 12 October and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December all give people who work Monday to Friday a three-day weekend.
December brings one of Spain’s best-known puentes. With Immaculate Conception on Tuesday 8 December, Monday 7 December is the day to check. In Andalucía it’s already an official public holiday, making it a four-day break for many people.
Easter in Spain in 2026
Good Friday falls on 3 April and is a public holiday across Spain. Many regions, including Andalucía, also observe Holy Thursday on 2 April, giving people who work Monday to Friday a four-day break.
Easter Monday falls on 6 April. It’s a public holiday in several regions, including the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja. Check the regional calendar if you’re travelling or booking an appointment over Easter.
Regional public holidays in Andalucía, Valencia and Murcia
Here in Andalucía, Día de Andalucía falls on Saturday 28 February in 2026. The official regional calendar keeps the holiday on that Saturday. See the Junta de Andalucía’s public holiday calendar.
In the Valencian Community, which includes Alicante and Benidorm, Día de la Comunitat Valenciana falls on Friday 9 October. Together with Spain’s National Day on Monday 12 October, that gives many people in the region a four-day weekend. Murcia celebrates Día de la Región de Murcia on Tuesday 9 June.
Local public holidays in Alhaurín de la Torre
Upsticks HQ is in Alhaurín de la Torre, where our two local public holidays in 2026 are Tuesday 20 January for San Sebastián and Wednesday 24 June for San Juan Bautista. Our office closes on both dates. See the official list of local holidays in Andalucía.
How to check public holidays where you live
For national and regional dates, use the BOE’s 2026 public holiday calendar. For local dates, check your town hall’s website or search for calendario laboral 2026 followed by the name of your town.
Top tip from the Upsticks family
Before booking an important appointment, check the calendar for the town where the appointment is taking place. Your local office may be open while the one you’re travelling to is closed for a festivo. If you’re making a special trip, it’s worth checking the opening hours directly.
