Switching your EU residency card for the new biometric TIE

With the introduction of the new biometric Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero TIE, the rush is now on for British citizens who have not yet registered as residents in Spain and wish to do so within the Withdrawal Agreement by 31 December 2020. But the new TIE isn’t just for first-time residents (within the Withdrawal Agreement). If you registered as a resident before 6 July 2020 and currently have an A4 certificate or a credit card-sized residency card known as the Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión, you can also make the switch to the TIE.

We break down the application for the TIE card into two stages. Stage 1 is for first time applicants, who on a favourable outcome to their application will receive a resolucion favorable and pass on to Stage 2. Holders of a current Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión pass directly to Stage 2. Check out our article which explains how we help first time applicants.

The Spanish government has also published a guide for both stages 1 and 2 of the application process.

If you hold a Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión,  it’s not obligatory to exchange, but it is recommended – read this article for more information about the pros and cons, and why it’s probably a good idea to exchange sooner rather than later.

Stage 2 is a two-step process with two appointments; at the first appointment, you’ll present your current residency card along with photos and all the relevant application forms and taxes paid. Once this is complete, you will be handed proof of the submission and have to return to collect your new TIE card a month later.

Let us help!

We can look after the whole process for you – prepare all the forms, prepay the taxes, check all documentation, go with you to both appointments and make sure you get it right first time. Book a call today!
