EU family reunification residency in Spain – all you need to know

EU families in Spain

Are you a combined EU/non-EU family dreaming of living in Spain? This post will guide you through the residency application process.

First, the EU citizen needs to obtain residency, which then paves the way for the non-EU family member to apply for residency based on family reunification.

Stage 1: EU Citizen Residency

As an EU citizen, you’ll need to demonstrate that you meet specific requirements, including:

  • Proof of Income: You must prove you have sufficient financial resources. Check out this article for more information on how you can do this
  • Health Cover: Evidence of health cover is essential. This could be through employment in Spain (either working on a Spanish contract or self.employed in Spain) or a private health insurance policy. If you are a state pensioner, and entitled to an S1, then this will also cover this requirement
  • Proof of Address: A Padron certificate is needed to prove your address.

Once you have all your documents, you visit the National Police Foreigner’s Office for your province, present your paperwork and once approved, you’ll receive the green, credit card-sized EU residency certificate.

Stage 2: Non-EU Family Reunification Residency

Once the EU citizen’s residency is secured, the non-EU family member (referred to as a Third Country National or TCN) can apply.

Key requirements include:

  • Proof of Relationship: You must provide a marriage or civil partnership certificate. Birth certificates are also vital if under 18’s are applying.
  • Online Application: The TCN application is submitted online.
  • TIE Card: Once you have your approval, you visit the National Police Foreigner’s Office to apply for your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) card.

Help with Navigating the Process

Navigating Spanish bureaucracy can be tricky, involving appointments at the Foreigner’s Office/National Police, online submissions and potentially translations and apostilles of non-EU documentation.

Upsticks ‘EU family reunification package’ offers structured planning, assistance in completing the application, online submission of documents, pre-payment of taxes, booking of appointments and in-person bilingual support at the Police Station.
